kelzadiddle: (keep calm and read Wodehouse)

The North of England Rocks. Literally.

Since it's been a good few days, in which my posts have consisted of automated Twitter dumps that are screaming for lj-cuts, I thought I'd humour you all and make an attempt at proving my existence. Hello, here I am! *waves* You may not be able to physically see me; just imagine an eighteen-year old of 75% legs, 50% hair, 25% floral shirt and 20% silly hat waving at you. If it looks like Cousin It from his hippy/gender-confused days, you've taken a wrong turning somewhere.

How has life been on Planet Kelza? Not bad, but not terribly exciting. Two CDs I ordered well before Christmas have yet to arrive, and one that I downloaded from iTunes has transpired to be only half an album. Any brief truce I held with Apple, therefore, has been cast asunder. I am not happy with them.

Tomorrow I get paid, so I can finally buy the red suit, striped scarf, eleven books and black waistcoat that have been lurking on the reserve rail for bugger knows how long. The rail's probably falling off under the weight of all my soon-to-be stuff. Work itself is same old; I seem to be spending an awful lot of time on the till without great cataclysm. Either it's misplaced its vocal cords or I'm actually doing it right. Probably both.

Everyone in work has been ill, me being the exception. Despite my best efforts, the most I've felt is a slight twinge of nausea after my obligatory morning raid on the chocolate tin. And all my hard work into that area still isn't paying off; there's a whole heap of chocolate yet to be devoured.

This morning a partial eclipse - Britain's first eclipse of any description, I believe, since '99 - was scheduled to blanket this little corner of the world, beginning in the Middle East before sweeping across Europe and over us. Unfortunately, the clouds beat the eclipse to it and so our view was crap. Cambridge, the bastards, got a cracking sight. If you're reading this and you happen to be from said area, I loathe you. Give me my eclipse back. Also, hi there. Be a dear and wipe your shoes before entering. ON MY DREAMS.

The source of this frothing rage stems from the fact that I am very tired. The fact that I am very tired stems from the fact that, upon learning of this marvel of nature that was due to occur, I stayed up into the wee small hours scanning articles on solar photography - how to do it with last-minute equipment, what settings to use depending on the type of eclipse, what times this particular eclipse would occur... I even MacGyvered a pinhole setup, because it was too late for me to rush out to a camera shop and demand they exchange a sun filter for my nonexistent cash. The next morning, I woke up at half six, double-checked Viv (my camera) to make sure the settings were all correct, braved the freezing cold, found my planned vantage point where there's a great view of the Eastern sky...

The bloody sky was still in bed; the cheek! And you know, had I not found out about the eclipse, I'd have never been aware of it! All we got was an overcast sky and a morning that was mildly darker, but it's January so it was hardly noticeable.

Pretty much nowhere in Britain - minus the aforementioned town - had a good view. It was cloudy over the whole country, according to reports on the Internet and from friends in various parts. So that's the '99 total eclipse I missed (it was only partial in Ireland, plus it was cloudy then as well), the 2009 earthquake, the 2010 earthquake... oh, and the one that happened last night. I missed that as well. Supposedly its epicentre was in Yorkshire, but people in Greater Manchester felt it. I was at my computer desk when it happened - and only felt a mild urge to eat something. As you do when the Earth is trembling in Greater Manchester...

And my writing? Bits and bobs. I haven't done all that much, to be honest. I've been reading more, and I think I need it to absorb the work of others. I haven't read properly in ages, so instead of focusing on my own novels I'll give myself a break to read and hopefully return to my own writing a bit more informed.
