Final Team Challenge - Day the Second

Today was great! The team took out Margaret (the Northern Irish lady from yesterday) and Maureen, a lady who's lived around the Broad Oak area all her life.

Today, the excursion was to the Blue Planet aquarium in Chester. We'd be going without Dave again, as he's still dead with the 'flu, we almost went without Matty because he blatantly disregarded the 'no phones in class' rule, and we only had two residents and one worker with us, but all in all it was a good day.

Before each day of the Final Team Challenge, we have to have a meeting to make sure everybody knows exactly what they're doing. The past two days, these meetings have been needlessly slow due to people refusing to listen. It took a while this morning, but Katie (our Team leader for the day) got through to them eventually. Tomorrow it's my day to lead - I hope that people are more willing to listen, as during the end-of-day review I brought up the fact that people were simply not paying attention during these critical discussions.

Due to the aforementioned slow start, we were a wee bit late to picking up our residents. Margaret sat next to Anna again, and Maureen was put next to the 'group chatterbox' Laura. Mmmyeah. I was immediately worried about how the journey would go.

Laura wound up talking to this 73-year-old lady about funerals. Inappropriate? Definitely. More than a few eyebrows were raised at this, I can assure you, and we gave her a good telling off. We're meant to be treating these people to an awesome few days, not depressing them to the end of their wits!

Did I mention yesterday that Margaret was awesome? She's feisty; an elderly, Northern Irish version of Katie. It was as frightening as it was fantastic. And Maureen? Well, I'll say this. As soon as we got off the bus, she took one look at me and said 'you're coming with me'. I was escorting her - or was she escorting me? - until lunch. She was marvellous! I really enjoyed her company, and it was nice to be with someone who was a little more independent! Through the day, it wasn't me telling Maureen we were going; it was Maureen telling me!

I'm glad we ended up going to Blue Planet aquarium. There were some absolutely brilliant exhibits there. We saw a show in which a member of staff told us about some of the animals present in the aquarium, explained the equipment and language of diving and let us watch some of the fish and rays being fed. The banter between the talker and the two divers was especially hilarious. The divers just kept arsing about!

The aquarium also features what you might call an 'aquatic petting zoo'. One of the rooms had waist-high pools of water that you could dabble your hands in and stroke stingrays. I remember doing the same in the Sea Life centre in Northern Ireland. You wouldn't think that rays feel like sandpaper, but they do, except for around the 'spine' area and wing edges, where it feels smooth. They're really cute, though; if you look at the underside of a stingray they always look like they're smiling.

The stingray awesomeness didn't stop there. One of the highlights of Blue Planet was the underwater tunnels; you know the sort; acrylic tunnels where you can see all the fish swimming overhead. These tunnels went under the same tanks that were featured in the show, so we got close-up views of the four Sand Tiger Sharks, including alpha male Flint with his funny teeth, and the massive Wilma. There were more stingrays in here, the largest being about 1.5 metres long, the smallest being 30cm! I got some cracking photos in here. I can't wait to see them developed!

Towards the end of the day, we made a minor change to our plan. Because Maureen was getting tired, we decided that the residents, their worker and Tim, Vicky and Barry would sit outside by the otters' enclosure and the rest of us could have half an hour to go wherever we wanted. This, for me, meant back to the tunnel for more photos and back to the aquatic petting zoo!

When we rejoined the others, Vicky asked us over the squealing of the otters to go back inside, count to five and come back out. For an experiment, she said. We did as we were told, baffled, went back outside - and the otters went mad. Have you ever heard the racket a group of otters can make? It's hilarious. They went bonkers every time someone came outside, then zapped themselves on the electric fences around the enclosure and went even more mad. Then one of the staff came out to feed them; after food they didn't give a toss about people! By the way, the otters we saw were Eurasians, like those in the video. There were only five in this enclosure but you get a good idea of how noisy they actually are!

We had a budget of £20 to buy Margaret and Maureen gifts. Maureen bought a light-up whale keyring and a turtle mug. I believe Margaret bought a cuddly seal toy. Afterwards, we had a quick cigarette break and it was back home to the centre for a debrief.

Tomorrow, it's my turn as team leader. And I've got the hardest task of all: co-ordinating the tea-party. I've got to make sure that the table is set ready for the guests' arrival, keep an eye on the people who are set to cook the meal and then multi-task, co-ordinating both the cooking crew and the entertainment team at the same time. It'll be a lot harder because, unlike the museum and Blue Planet, keeping the guests interested will be entirely down to us. There'll be no exhibits to look at!

I'll admit, I'm nervous. I'm worried mainly about people not listening to me or kicking off when I ask them to listen, and a possible lack of supplies. I do hope the day goes well, though.

I know, right? :D They;re so bloody hilarious - I've been wanting to post a video of them on here ever since I saw some on a documentary that were positively screaming at the camera, but I didn't know where to look. I'm glad I found this!

The tea-party day went surprisingly well! The only thing that went badly was out of my control - two people kicked off at each-other at the table; thankfully they were swiftly sent home.
